BREAKING THE PLASTIC WAVE
More than 1.3 billion tons of plastic waste will flow into the world’s oceans and land over the next two decades without widespread intervention, according to th new report "Breaking the plastic Wave". The rise in single-use plastic has become more problematic during the coronavirus pandemic, which has also disrupted global waste management systems and caused significant cuts in plastic prices.
But let’s not lose heart and tackle the problem! In Rotterdam young tech innovators work day and night to face the challange of the plastic problem – and they want to inspire you to do the same! Ask these three leading innovators in plastic waste solutions your questions about their tech solutions or pitch your own brilliant idea to them…
The Ocean Cleanup about the Interceptor
The Interceptor is The Ocean Cleanup’s answer for to river plastic waste. It is the first scalable solution to prevent plastic from entering the world’s oceans from rivers. It is 100% solar-powered, extracts plastic autonomously, and is capable of operating in the majority of the world’s most polluting rivers. This winter The Ocean Cleanup’s Interceptor 004 set sail from Rotterdam to the Dominican Republic. It has just started its will be deployed for the Herculean task to rid the Rio Ozama, one of the worlds most polluted rivers, from its tonnes of plastic waste. The philosophy of The Ocean Cleanup: to rid the oceans of plastic, we need to not only clean up what is already out there, but also stop new plastic from entering the ocean: we need to close the tap Carlo Wesseling from the Ocean Cleanup River Team will tell you more.
WasteShark cleans the harbours
A real life Whale Shark inspired Richard Hardiman to create the WasteShark. This versatile drone that not only "eats" plastic, but also collects data about water quality at the same time. By collecting the data, the product allows the user to closely monitor the environment and composition of the water in real time and create an accurate picture of the water's DNA over time. Richard Hardiman recently won the European Green Deal prize to further develop this innovation and he will demonstrate us how it works.
Clear rivers, the importance of education
Ramon Knoester, originally an architect, is the founder of CLEAR RIVERS and initiator of Recycled Park Rotterdam. Within CLEAR RIVERS, Ramon fights for clean waters in all affective ways with clean-up actions, placement of Plastic Traps, education, awareness programs and with recycling the recovered floating waste into valuable new products. He will tell us more about his new projects as well as the importance of technical education on the matters of waste reduction and recycling.
