Lecture: Are you Smarter than a pirate?
If a pirate stole your navigational instruments, would you be able to sail your ship safely home? This was the kind of problem that young sailors had to solve in navigation school in the 17th and 18th centuries.
Author Margaret Schotte
Margaret Schotte, a Dutch-Canadian whose family emigrated from Bergschenhoek, is back in the Netherlands to launch her new book, Sailing School: Navigating Science and Skill, 1550-1800. Drawing upon examples of A+ student work from the museum’s collection of Golden Age books and manuscripts, Margaret Schotte will walk through some of the math lessons and memory tricks (ezelsbruggetjes) that sailor and pirates used in the classroom and on the high seas.
